Seminar On Protection Switching in Communication Networks

The problem of protecting communication networks against failures and recovering from such failures in a
very swift manner has been the topic of large number of research papers over the last decade [1-7]. With the high volume of data passing through optical networks, and vital services relying on the availability of these
communication channels, survivability of the networkhas become imperative. Using Wavelength Division
Multiplexing (WDM), many optical links can be established on a single fiber. An optical fiber can carry tera-bps of data. Each of many channels multiplexed on the fiber have data rates in the range of a few Gbps, and
they can be fed by electronic sources without concentrators. According to traffic needs, add/drop multiplexers and cross-connect switches are configured, such that different circuit-switched paths are formed
between various node pairs. These circuit-switched paths or channels that are multiplexed on shared optical fibersare called lightpaths or logical links. Some papers have called them clear-channels (for instance. An optical fiber connecting two nodes in physical layer is called a physical link. Each of the lightpaths that traverse the same physical link uses a different wavelength. Due to flexibility of WDM networks, lightpaths can be configured based on traffic requirements, and the desired topology of lightpaths can be created,  regardless of how nodes are connected in the physical layer. The topology of network of lightpaths is called logical topology, as opposed to physical topology, which shows how network nodes are connected with physical fiber optic cables. When traffic matrix changes, network operator reconfigures the logical topology, without having to make costly changes to the physical topology. There has been considerable amount of work on methods of restoration of network when one (or more) physical link fails, or when a network node fails. With employing standby components and automatic failover between node components, node failures are much more infrequent, compared to a fiber optic cable cut. Hence, more focus is devoted to recovery from link failures in research.
