DESIGN AND DEMONSTRATION OF A VERY HIGH DATA RATE MULTIMEDIA HF COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
This paper presents and demonstrates a system for very high data rate (about 80 kbps) multimedia transmissions over HF channels. Optimizations are proposed at various levels of the OSIIISO protocol stack, to enable efficient use of standard multimedia and data IPv6 applications in HF, in a way that is
completely transparent for the end user. A demonstration test-bed was built, in order to evaluate the
performance of the proposed system, through various scenarios derived from military requirements and operational needs. Experimental results obtained during laboratory tests and on-air demonstrations campaigns are reported in the final part of the present paper.

Modern military forces express growing operational needs in terms of data and multimedia transmission: real-time audio, image, video, e-mail, file transfer, web-browsing, but also emerging applications such as presence detection and "chat".Interactive image capability, supporting on-the-t1y decision from the image contents, and access to digital data have indeed become a requirement, both involving the transfer of large amounts of data across the tactical environment. In practice, military operations often require the simultaneous resort to several of the above services and, traditionally, the High Frequency (HF) communication link represents a bottleneck in military networks, with a significant impact on the user quality of service (QoS). To reach satisfactory performance with standard IP over HF links, the following enhancements have to be brought to actual HF radios

• Increasing the link capacity through the design of an
extended 24 kHz bandwidth radio transceiver and a new
very high data rate wide band HF waveform.
• Optimizing bandwidth usage by proposing techniques to
reduce the overhead of IP and to improve the QoS of
TCP-based Internet applications.
• Implementing differentiated QoS management, in conjunction
with retransmission mechanisms, to meet the
specific QoS requirement of heterogeneous traffic f1ows.
