Voltage stability imposes limitations on the system operation and therefore maintaining adequate reactive power generation and reserve is considered important for maintaining voltage stability. There are mainly two methods of maintaining voltage stability preventive and corrective control actions. This seminar focuses on the preventive actions for maintaining voltage stability and it is considered from the generator point of view as it is the major source of reactive power. The management of the reactive power generation and reactive power reserve (RPR), of a generator are the main preventive actions against voltage instability. For taking the preventive action an algorithm called Benders Algorithm is used which determine the RPR, which is necessary for maintaining voltage stability in the event of an oncoming contingency. This algorithm has two steps master problem and sub problem. The Master problem determines the minimum overall needed RPR of generators such that the system withstands any outage scenario. The Sub problem determines, additional RPR to ensure voltage stability whenever the obtained RPRs by rst step are insu cient to confront with dynamic system behavior. Thus this method predicts the reactive power reserve to be kept for maintaining adequate voltage stability. This preventive method can help minimize the Post fault corrective e orts for voltage stabilization and help improve the overall system stability.
