Traction Transformer Seminar Report
This contribution deals with a new con guration of traction transformer with multilevel converter topology and DC-DC resonant converter for locomotives.This marks an important milestone in traction world.Here,the paper also points a comparative study with conventional transformer topology.Two innovative conversion systems have been studied, which permit the use of transformers of greatly reduced size.An overall design requirements and control system for PETT prototype is developed and describes the design of a 1.2 MW Power Electronic Traction Transformer (PETT) demonstrator in traction applications for 15 kV / 16.7 Hz and 25 kV / 50 Hz grid supply.
One especially challenging application area for transformers is traction. The more space the transformer occupies, the less is available for passengers on the train. Its weight is also a factor in terms of permissible train axle load and additional energy needed to accelerate it. Factors determining the minimum size of a transformer include the frequency and the power rating. A higher frequency transformer would permit weight savings as well as space savings. This is the motivation behind power-electronic traction transformer (PETT).Ultimate target is to reduce the weight and size of the transformer thus increase in reliability and e ciency.In conventional railway systems,the supply of the traction chain and auxiliaries is realized by a Line frequency transformer and converter modules connected to the catenary,this leads to consuming more space,weight and reducing the e ciency and reliability.So the LFT is replaced by MFT,where the high frequency waveforms are dierectly to the transformer terminals so that the overall magnetic volume is reduced and more compact converter designs are reached.In addition to this ,multilevel converter topology and DC-DC resonant converter techniqes have to be reduces the switching losses,to gain wide output voltage regulation and increases the switching frequency.Thus here introducing this paper Power Electronic Traction Transformer(PETT).This paper,describes about the constructional features and control system of PETT,(which is presently in use by the Swiss Federal Railways),and a comparative study with conventional system.
